Process

A brief explanation of the portrait process

The gallery section shows examples of commissioned portraits in various sizes and mediums:  oil, pastel and charcoal.  Stella’s initial meeting with clients is to discuss the feel of the portrait that they envision for their family. The portrait is a collaboration between the patron and the artist and there are many details that are considered together.   These include the choice of medium, the size of the portrait, the setting, clothing and any props that might be appropriate to include.  In the first photo session poses will often be shot both indoors and out in search of interesting backgrounds and lighting.

Ehrich works from photographs that she takes herself whenever possible.  The photo sessions serve as a “getting to know you” opportunity between the artist and the sitter and gives the artist valuable impressions that she uses in her studio work.  Initial photo sessions last about an hour.  Stella analyzes the results to select the shots that will translate successfully into a painting.  This selection of photos is presented to the client at a second meeting and together they choose the view that best captures the sitter.  Client involvement is important at this point in the process to insure that the finished portrait will reflect the spirit and character of the sitter as well as their likeness.

The finished portrait is delivered within 8 to 10 months from when the photos are chosen.  After the work is completed in the studio, a final sitting is used to put the finishing touches on the portrait if they are needed. Small children will often pose for this final sitting while being read to or while watching a movie.

When the details of the portrait have been established and the photos approved by the client, a  50% deposit is requested  to begin work.  The balance is due upon delivery of the finished portrait and its approval by the client.  The cost of framing, shipping and crating are additional.  Please contact Stella for pricing.  Thank you for your interest.
